Están Mirando is a multimedia dance-theatre piece performed during Brooklyn Arts’ Exchange Upstart Program in March of 2018
Serving as a prequel to Hidalgo’s full-length piece Chivas 18, this piece explores gender roles, violence and outward "perfection" in Hispanic culture in a darkly comedic format. Caught in a telenovela, an immigrant husband and wife duo navigate a dramatic event in a melodramatic context. Hidalgo uses projections, music, dance and drag to reveal the deepest layers of insecurity these characters are holding on to; and what happens when the audience is revealed to them?
This unique work exists as both a live performance and short film. Throughout the live performance, the film serves as a backdrop. The audience is presented with multiple perspectives of the couple’s interactions, as the actors on stage are in full “drag” of each others’ character on screen.
